Biography

Guido M. Cortelazzo holds a “Laurea in Ingegneria Elettronica” degree from the University of Padova ( 1976 ), and a Master Degree and a Philosophy Doctor Degree both in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ( 1980 and 1984, respectively ). From 1983 to 1986 he worked with M/A-COM Linkabit, a satellite communication company of San Diego, California. In 1986 he joined the Department of Information Engineering (DEI) of the University of Padova where he is now full professor. In 1986 he co-funded with G.A. Mian the Image Processing Laboratory of DEI and in 1993 he funded the Multimedia Telecommunications and Technology Laboratory of DEI, which is still directing. In 1998 he was visiting associate with the Califorrnia Institute of Technology (Pasadena, CA ).
He was active in the organization of several special sessions and meetings. A founding member of the steering committee of the International Symposium on 3D Data Processing Visualization and Transmission (3DPVT) the proceedings of which he co-edited in in 2002 with Concettina Guerra. 3DPVT has now merged to the 3DIMPVT Conference, a reference conference for the community active on 3D.
The current professional interests of Guido M. Cortelazzo concern the automatic construction of 3D models of still and dynamic scenes and their progressive transmission.
He is the author of about seventy journal papers and two books: A. Basu, I. Cheng, G.M. Cortelazzo and S.K. Tripathi, “3D Online Multimedia: Processing, Transmission and Visualization”, World Scientific Publishing, 2007 and C.Dal Mutto, P. Zanuttigh, G.M. Cortelazzo, “Time-of-Flight Cameras and Microsoft Kinect: A user perspective on technology and applications”, Springer, 2012. In 2004 he was Co-Guest Editor with C. Guerra of a special issue of Computer Vision and Image Understanding with title “ Model-based and Image-based 3D Scene Representation for Interactive Visualization” and in 2006 with D. Taubman of a special issue of Signal Processing-Image Communication with title “Interactive representation of still and dynamic scenes”. He has been the (co-)recipient of Italian, and international research and industry grants and holds a few industrial patents.


Research

The “Laboratorio di Tecnologia e Telecomunicazioni Multimediali” (LTTM) of the Department of
Infprmation Engeneering of the Università di Padova (http://lttm.dei.unipd.it), founded in 1993,
focuses on the production and transmission of multimedia content with special attention to 3D
models. The activity of the LTTM spans therefore across various disciplines, such as image
processing, computer vision, computer graphics and telecommunications.
Current research topics are:

• 3D video: acquisition, compression and data transmission
• 3D recostruction from images, range data and heterogeneous data of still and dynamic scenes
• Analysis and processing of 2D and 3D multispectral images
• Content-based search within data-bases with multimedia data and 3D models
